How Often Does my Dog go Outside For Daycare and Boarding? How Does the Day Work?
*We strive to get the dogs out between 5 and 6 times a day for daycare and 7 to 8 times for boarding. They are rotated out in small groups based on size and temperament with rest periods between each playgroup. While inside they have their own area to unwind, have some water, and have their own belongings if you so choose. The earlier you drop off and the later you pick up also helps us to get your pups out for the maximum amount of times daily.
How Big are the Playgroups and are they Supervised While Outside?
*Our playgroups are meant to offer fun play with groups of about 5 to 7 dogs in which the dogs get ample play and ample people attention. Our dogs continue to go out in the same groups with the same dogs while they are in our care so there are no new reintroductions and they know all their friends in their group. We have limited space, so this structure allows for us to provide and care about the safety of the dogs and the staff. We have a small dog staff member and large dog staff member outside at all times, along with someone inside at all times, to make sure the dogs are constantly being watched over.
Why Can’t my Dog be Outside all Day Long?
*This structure guarantees we are never over a certain amount of dogs per staff member. Safety is of the utmost importance for us, so we like to keep our groups smaller and more controlled so that each and every dog feels safe and gets that added attention that sometimes is missed with large group play. We provide all inclusive play in which an owner can feel comfortable dropping off their older dog to chill with older dogs and sunbathe, while we also have structured puppy groups for the younger more active guys.
Do You have Indoor Play and Outdoor Play?
*Most days are beautiful outside and we have no issues. All yards are equipped with state of the art misting systems , large covered structures with remote controlled screens for additional protection from the elements, and large commercial heating systems etc. The outside areas are probably some of the largest in Central Austin. We do offer an indoor play area for when the days aren’t amazing, so we will switch the dogs in and out of that space too.
How Long do they Stay Outside?
*Our playgroups vary in time due to activity levels, but average about 20 to 25 minutes each. Daycare clients should be aware that our playgroups start on our schedule. So you will want to drop off early and pick up later to have your dog included in all the playtimes. We do not provide all day play, our dogs rest in between their groups. We have found that our method allows for everyone to play safely. All day play is a mixed bag for some dogs who may be a bit older, a bit more shy, or in general need a bit more attention from staff.
Can I Bring Food or Snacks for my Dog while at BHV Daycare?
*If you want to bring breakfast, lunch, or dinner for your pooch you are more than welcome as they have their very own suite to enjoy their food and snacks for both daycare and boarding.
Is my Dog in a Crate while at BHV?
*We never use crates at BHV. All of our suites were hand built, by us, for maximum space and comfort. They average in size at about 5 ft by 5ft. We offer all dogs (who won’t munch on it) our own bedding to make them comfortable on their Kuranda beds that are in all of our suites. These suites are white picket fenced areas that are open at the top with a little gate on the front. We have all different sizes for families, small dogs, and even dogs who jump. Take a look at our tour on our Getting Started/Tour page to see examples of what these looks like. All rooms also have Tv’s on to provide some comforts of home.
What Should I Bring with my Dog When it is Boarding?
*We suggest bringing your own food so that your pup’s stomach doesn’t have to adjust to our food. You can bring toys, beds, blankets, etc. Whatever makes your dog more comfortable. We also have refrigerators for specialty diets and can distribute meds at no additional cost.
Can I Call and Check in on my Dog?
*Feel free to call (512-477-3647), text (512-477-3647), or email us at hello@bhvaustin.com for our South store. Our North store is 512-551-9777. This number can also be texted too. The email for the North store is bhvtoo@bhvaustin.com. You can contact us when you feel like you miss them, and we will give you an update. The best way to get more immediate attention is by email and text during business hours. Many times we have clients picking up or dropping off which make answering the phones challenging at times. We also post pics on Facebook daily so you can see them playing!
Why Does my Dog Need to do a Trial Day Prior to Boarding?
*This trial day is super important so that your dog can get to know our environment, our staff, and be generally more comfortable when they stay with us overnight. It also gives us the opportunity to get to know you as the owner too!
Why does my Dog need a Collar and ID tag?
*Having a collar helps us lead your dog in and out of their kennel and allows a bit of control. ID tags are helpful to complete the ensemble. All collars are removed nightly to prevent choking hazards.
What Makes BHV Different?
*We have been doing this a long time. We have been in the Austin area at our South location for over 20 years. Unlike other facilities, we are locally owned and the owner is on site and in contact with us daily. Who am I kidding? I am the owner. I take great pride in what we do. I love dogs, I love other people’s dogs, and I love this business. I am a part of all sides. Websites (which you can probably tell), logo (which is my dog Zuzu), and everything else in between. The employees are also at the very heart of what we do. You will notice a low turnover and the same faces greeting you daily. We do this because we love it. We love the little details of meeting new dogs and working with them to create a space they feel comfortable and happy to visit. We love working with clients and meeting the dogs they add to their families. This is what makes us different. We are straight up and honest and we are there for you and your pup through all the stages. ❤️
